A simple three-step flow

How to translate Sinhala and Tamil speech online

This live Sinhala–Tamil translator pairs Sinhala (Sri Lanka) with Tamil (India), not Sri Lanka Tamil. Use the page for a short question about a station, a meeting time, or a service instruction, then compare both scripts in the fixed caption columns before acting on a detail.

  1. 01

Confirm Sinhala (Sri Lanka) and Tamil (India)

The first selection is Sinhala (Sri Lanka) and the second is Tamil (India). Tamil (Sri Lanka) is not offered on this page, so check that the displayed Tamil option is what you want to use.

  2. 02

Speak after the status says Listening

Press Start translating, approve the browser microphone request, and wait for Listening. Ask one short question in Sinhala or Tamil and pause so the other person can take a turn.

  3. 03

Compare the Sinhala and Tamil text

Sinhala and Tamil use different scripts. Read each original caption beside its translation, particularly for a station, street, or time. Ask the speaker to repeat a name when you need to write it down.

Words on screen

Follow each turn in the two caption columns

Read Sinhala (Sri Lanka) speech beside its translation, then let the other speaker answer in Tamil (India) if they prefer. The text stays grouped by the two selected languages, so check the original wording when a place, name, or number matters.

Captions are text only, and either selected language can be spoken in the same session. The examples on this page are written to illustrate the languages; they are not captions captured from a live session.

With live captions, both people can follow each turn and respond while the conversation is underway. Use the two language columns to check names, numbers, and places together.

Language selections

Choose the two languages for this conversation

This page starts with Sinhala (Sri Lanka) and Tamil (India). Speakers can take turns in either selected language during one session. The language columns stay fixed, and the Web trial is up to one cumulative minute per visitor.

How to select the two conversation languages in the browser voice translator
SettingHow it works
First languageStart with Sinhala (Sri Lanka).
Second languageUse Tamil (India) as the second language; both remain visible in separate caption columns.
Conversation directionEither selected language can be spoken in the same session; its translation appears in the other language’s column.

This pair uses Sinhala (Sri Lanka) and Tamil (India); it does not offer a Sri Lanka Tamil option. Sinhala and Tamil appear in their own scripts, with no promise of Latin transliteration or automatic regional detection.

Short, practical exchanges

Where a short live exchange can help

Finding a train station

Ask where the station is, then pause for the answer. Check the Sinhala location wording and the Tamil translation before choosing a direction.

Coordinating an arrival

Say the time alone after agreeing on a meeting place. Reading the number in both scripts makes it easier to confirm the same arrival time.

Clarifying a short instruction

Use one question at a counter or reception desk, then ask for a concise repeat if the answer is unclear. Avoid putting a name, address, and time into one long turn.

Practical tips

Make each caption easier to check

  • 01Check the exact Tamil (India) label; do not read this page as a Tamil (Sri Lanka) selection.
  • 02Use one short question at a time and pause before the other speaker answers.
  • 03Read the Sinhala or Tamil original when confirming a place name, number, or meeting time.
  • 04For a name you need to write down, ask the speaker to repeat it slowly and inspect the original-script caption.

Quick troubleshooting

No microphone input?

Check this site’s microphone permission and your system input device, then return to the tool and start again. If another application is using the microphone, close that recording session first.

Does the browser play translated speech?

No. The browser voice translator shows recognized speech and translations as text captions only; it does not play translated speech.

Connection interrupted?

Wait for the status to recover before speaking. If the session ends, check your connection and press Start again. A reconnect does not guarantee that speech from the interruption can be recovered.
