A simple three-step flow

How to translate Japanese to English speech online

Use this live Japanese–English page for a short travel or reception exchange where a kanji name needs a second look. It starts with Japanese and English (United States). Speakers take turns in one session, the columns stay fixed, and the Japanese caption uses Japanese script rather than romaji. The page does not choose a keigo level for you.

  1. 01

    Confirm the Japanese catalog label

The starting selection is Japanese, ja-JP, with English (United States). Check those labels before Start. The page does not switch into another language because of nearby speech.

  2. 02

Say the name, then pause for the kanji

Press Start translating and allow microphone access. Wait for Listening. Give the reservation name in one short sentence. A page visit does not request the microphone.

  3. 03

Read the Japanese caption before you copy the name

Kanji names are not fully determined by an English spelling. Compare both columns and ask for the name again if a character is unclear.

Words on screen

Follow each turn in the two caption columns

Read Japanese speech beside its translation, then let the other speaker answer in English (United States) if they prefer. The text stays grouped by the two selected languages, so check the original wording when a place, name, or number matters.

Captions are text only, and either selected language can be spoken in the same session. The examples on this page are written to illustrate the languages; they are not captions captured from a live session.

With live captions, both people can follow each turn and respond while the conversation is underway. Use the two language columns to check names, numbers, and places together.

Language selections

Choose the two languages for this conversation

This page starts with Japanese and English (United States). Speakers can take turns in either selected language during one session. The language columns stay fixed, and the Web trial is up to one cumulative minute per visitor.

How to select the two conversation languages in the browser voice translator
SettingHow it works
First languageStart with Japanese.
Second languageUse English (United States) as the second language; both remain visible in separate caption columns.
Conversation directionEither selected language can be spoken in the same session; its translation appears in the other language’s column.

The default catalog label is Japanese, ja-JP. The example uses kanji and hiragana in ordinary written Japanese, not romaji. Polite です/ます is an edited illustration, not a promise that the page identifies keigo, plain form, or dialect. Confirm names, times, and places in the Japanese caption.

Short, practical exchanges

Where a short live exchange can help

Checking a reservation name

Say 佐藤太郎 or the guest’s actual name in one turn. Use the Japanese caption if the English order or spelling is ambiguous.

Asking for a platform or exit

Ask for one place. Compare any number in both columns before you move.

Agreeing on a meeting time

Keep the time separate from the place. The other person can answer in English without reversing the pair.

Practical tips

Make each caption easier to check

  • 01Do not expect romaji. Read the Japanese script beside the English line.
  • 02Repeat a kanji name on its own if you need to write it down.
  • 03One place and one time are easier to check than a long direction.
  • 04The browser does not play a spoken translation or save the captions as a file.

Quick troubleshooting

No microphone input?

Check this site’s microphone permission and your system input device, then return to the tool and start again. If another application is using the microphone, close that recording session first.

Does the browser play translated speech?

No. The browser voice translator shows recognized speech and translations as text captions only; it does not play translated speech.

Connection interrupted?

Wait for the status to recover before speaking. If the session ends, check your connection and press Start again. A reconnect does not guarantee that speech from the interruption can be recovered.

Japanese to English voice translator FAQs

Questions before you start

01Will Japanese appear as romaji?

The example is written in Japanese script. This page does not promise romaji or a pronunciation guide under the caption.

02Does it handle keigo automatically?

The language selection is Japanese. It does not choose or guarantee a keigo level. The sample sentence simply uses the polite です ending.

03Can an English speaker answer in the same session?

Yes. Japanese and English stay selected while either person speaks. You do not reverse the columns for the reply.

04Can I upload a Japanese voice memo?

No. Live microphone speech starts only after Start and permission. Files, translated audio, and caption export are not part of this page.

05What happens to unused Web time if we change pages?

Used time stays used. The Web trial is up to one cumulative minute per visitor across stops, refreshes, and pair changes. The app offer is three free days and is separate.
