A simple three-step flow

How to translate Chinese to English speech online

This live page starts with Chinese (Simplified) and English (United States) for a short spoken exchange, with Simplified Chinese captions. It is a Mandarin starting point, not a Cantonese page: Chinese (Cantonese) is a different catalog entry. Speakers can take turns in the same session while the columns stay fixed, which helps when you need to check a price, name, or place together.

  1. 01

Start from Chinese (Simplified), not Cantonese

Confirm Chinese (Simplified), zh-CN, and English (United States) before starting. In the 8 October 2026 catalog, Chinese (Cantonese) is yue-CN and Chinese (Traditional) is zh-TW. Choose one of those only if it is the variety you actually want.

  2. 02

Take one short turn, then read both columns

Press Start translating and allow the microphone when both people are ready. A page visit does not open the microphone. Pause after a price, name, or instruction so the Simplified Chinese and English lines can be compared.

  3. 03

Use the Simplified characters to check details

Read the Chinese caption beside the English one. A translated place name may not be the wording you need on a sign. Repeat a name or number alone if the characters look wrong.

Words on screen

Follow each turn in the two caption columns

Read Chinese (Simplified) speech beside its translation, then let the other speaker answer in English (United States) if they prefer. The text stays grouped by the two selected languages, so check the original wording when a place, name, or number matters.

Captions are text only, and either selected language can be spoken in the same session. The examples on this page are written to illustrate the languages; they are not captions captured from a live session.

With live captions, both people can follow each turn and respond while the conversation is underway. Use the two language columns to check names, numbers, and places together.

Language selections

Choose the two languages for this conversation

This page starts with Chinese (Simplified) and English (United States). Speakers can take turns in either selected language during one session. The language columns stay fixed, and the Web trial is up to one cumulative minute per visitor.

How to select the two conversation languages in the browser voice translator
SettingHow it works
First languageStart with Chinese (Simplified).
Second languageUse English (United States) as the second language; both remain visible in separate caption columns.
Conversation directionEither selected language can be spoken in the same session; its translation appears in the other language’s column.

The default is Chinese (Simplified), the zh-CN catalog label collected on 8 October 2026. That selection is the Mandarin written form in Simplified characters. It is not Chinese (Cantonese), yue-CN, and it is not Chinese (Traditional), zh-TW. The page does not detect Cantonese or switch scripts by itself. Confirm names, prices, and places in the original caption.

Short, practical exchanges

Where a short live exchange can help

Asking a shop price

Ask about one item. Compare the amount in both captions before you pay. Add a second item only after the first price is clear.

Checking a person’s name

Chinese names are often clearer in characters than in an English spelling. Read the Simplified caption and ask the speaker to repeat the name if a character is uncertain.

Confirming where to meet

Say one place and one time. Either person can answer in the other selected language. Check the place in the original caption before you leave.

Practical tips

Make each caption easier to check

  • 01If the speaker is using Cantonese, look for Chinese (Cantonese) in the picker before Start. Do not leave the default on Simplified and assume Cantonese will be handled.
  • 02Expect Simplified characters, not a pinyin pronunciation line. This page does not promise pinyin captions.
  • 03Keep numbers, room names, and personal names in their own short turns.
  • 04Captions stay on this page only. The tool does not play translated speech or save an exportable transcript.

Quick troubleshooting

No microphone input?

Check this site’s microphone permission and your system input device, then return to the tool and start again. If another application is using the microphone, close that recording session first.

Does the browser play translated speech?

No. The browser voice translator shows recognized speech and translations as text captions only; it does not play translated speech.

Connection interrupted?

Wait for the status to recover before speaking. If the session ends, check your connection and press Start again. A reconnect does not guarantee that speech from the interruption can be recovered.

Chinese to English voice translator FAQs

Questions before you start

01Is this page Mandarin or Cantonese?

It starts with Chinese (Simplified), zh-CN, for Mandarin written in Simplified characters. Chinese (Cantonese), yue-CN, is a separate catalog option. Select that entry before Start if Cantonese is the language you need.

02Will the captions be Simplified or Traditional?

The default is Simplified. Chinese (Traditional), zh-TW, was a different entry in the 8 October 2026 catalog. The page does not convert scripts on its own.

03Does it show pinyin under the characters?

No. The example is Simplified Chinese text beside English. This page does not promise a pronunciation guide or Latin-letter transcription.

04Can both people speak without reversing the columns?

Yes. With Chinese (Simplified) and English selected, either language can be spoken in the same session. Each language keeps its column.

05What is the Web time limit for this live exchange?

Up to one cumulative minute per visitor. Time already used still counts after you stop or refresh. The Owll Translator app offer is three free days, separate from this browser trial.
