A simple three-step flow

How to translate Portuguese to English speech online

This live Portuguese–English page starts with Portuguese (Portugal) and English (United States), not Portuguese (Brazil). A Portugal wording such as comboio, or a place such as Porto, belongs to this default. Speakers take turns in one session, and the columns stay fixed so you can check the original caption before you travel or confirm a time.

  1. 01

Choose Portugal or Brazil on purpose

The page opens on Portuguese (Portugal), pt-PT. Portuguese (Brazil), pt-BR, is a different catalog entry from the 8 October 2026 list. Select Brazil before Start only if that is the variety you want. The page will not switch for you.

  2. 02

Speak one travel detail at a time

Press Start translating and allow the microphone. Wait for Listening. Ask about one train, time, or place. Loading the page does not start a session.

  3. 03

Read the Portugal wording in the original caption

Compare the Portuguese line with the English one. If you expected a Brazilian term, check whether pt-PT is still selected.

Words on screen

Follow each turn in the two caption columns

Read Portuguese (Portugal) speech beside its translation, then let the other speaker answer in English (United States) if they prefer. The text stays grouped by the two selected languages, so check the original wording when a place, name, or number matters.

Captions are text only, and either selected language can be spoken in the same session. The examples on this page are written to illustrate the languages; they are not captions captured from a live session.

With live captions, both people can follow each turn and respond while the conversation is underway. Use the two language columns to check names, numbers, and places together.

English (United States)

Language selections

Choose the two languages for this conversation

This page starts with Portuguese (Portugal) and English (United States). Speakers can take turns in either selected language during one session. The language columns stay fixed, and the Web trial is up to one cumulative minute per visitor.

How to select the two conversation languages in the browser voice translator
SettingHow it works
First languageStart with Portuguese (Portugal).
Second languageUse English (United States) as the second language; both remain visible in separate caption columns.
Conversation directionEither selected language can be spoken in the same session; its translation appears in the other language’s column.

The default is Portuguese (Portugal), pt-PT. Portuguese (Brazil), pt-BR, was a separate entry in the catalog collected on 8 October 2026. This page does not rewrite Portugal vocabulary into Brazilian vocabulary or the reverse. The example uses comboio and Porto as an edited Portugal illustration. Confirm times and place names in the original caption.

Short, practical exchanges

Where a short live exchange can help

Asking about a train from Portugal

Use one destination and one time. Comboio is the Portugal wording in the edited example; do not treat this default as Brazilian Portuguese.

Checking a place name

Read Porto, or whichever place was spoken, in the Portuguese caption before you follow the English line.

Confirming a clock time

Repeat the hour alone if the first caption also contains a place. Either person can answer in the other selected language.

Practical tips

Make each caption easier to check

  • 01Leave the default on Portuguese (Portugal) for this page. Select Portuguese (Brazil) first if the speaker uses that variety.
  • 02Do not assume a word you know from Brazil will be the one in a Portugal caption.
  • 03Check the destination and the hour in separate turns when both matter.
  • 04This page does not play audio translations or accept an uploaded recording.

Quick troubleshooting

No microphone input?

Check this site’s microphone permission and your system input device, then return to the tool and start again. If another application is using the microphone, close that recording session first.

Does the browser play translated speech?

No. The browser voice translator shows recognized speech and translations as text captions only; it does not play translated speech.

Connection interrupted?

Wait for the status to recover before speaking. If the session ends, check your connection and press Start again. A reconnect does not guarantee that speech from the interruption can be recovered.

Portuguese to English voice translator FAQs

Questions before you start

01Is the default Brazilian Portuguese?

No. The starting label is Portuguese (Portugal), pt-PT. Portuguese (Brazil), pt-BR, is a separate catalog option. Select it before Start if you need it.

02Why does the example say comboio?

Comboio is ordinary Portugal vocabulary for a train. The sentence is an edited illustration, not a live transcript, and it is there to show the Portugal default rather than a Brazilian wording.

03Can the other person answer in English?

Yes. Portuguese and English can be spoken in turns. The columns stay with the selected languages.

04Can I translate a Portuguese video here?

No. The page listens to the microphone after Start. It does not take video or audio files, and it does not export captions.

05Does the one-minute Web trial reset on this page?

It does not reset when you stop, refresh, or open another pair. The allowance is up to one cumulative minute per visitor. The app offer is three free days and is separate.
